FACT CHECK: NC Dem Chair Falsely Says Republicans 'Cut Public School Funding'

In a post on X this past weekend, North Carolina Democratic Party Chairwoman Anderson Clayton said Republicans voted to strip public school classrooms of funding in the current state budget.

Of course, that is a lie.

Republicans have increased public education funding for a decade in addition to growing the state’s popular Opportunity Scholarship program for thousands of families.

The current state budget demonstrates Republicans’ commitment to fulfilling its state constitutional obligation to public education while also offering school choice options for families to choose what works best for them.

Check for yourself: here's the 2023 Appropriations Act. Public school funding makes up over one-third of the budget's spending.

“Republicans have made the family-first promise to provide education options that work for all families. State Democrats, led by Governor Roy Cooper, Josh Stein, and Anderson Clayton, have made clear they will stand in the doorway between families and their right to choose an education plan that works best for them,” said NCGOP Communications Director Matt Mercer.
