Cal Cunningham Ignites NC BBQ Scandal After Tweet

September 29, 2020
For Immediate Release

Raleigh, NC - Cal Cunningham published a tweet wearing an “ambassador of North Carolina BBQ” apron while using a gas grill, with hot dog buns, which is the exact opposite of North Carolina BBQ. This is clearly the biggest North Carolina BBQ scandal since the Rufus Edmisten's “Edmisten Attacks Barbeque” scandal way back in 1986. Navigating the politics of North Carolina BBQ has been a staple of Tar Heel politics since the Halifax Resolves. Cal Cunningham’s proclamation that he’s an ambassador of North Carolina BBQ while using a gas grill and hot dog buns in his North Carolina taxpayer-subsided mansion is simply the biggest unforced error this cycle.

Cunningham must immediately answer the following questions:

  1.  What was he cooking on that gas grill to put on those hot dog buns?

  2. When was the last time he had “real” bbq?

  3. Can he define the difference between Lexington Style, Eastern Style, and Schumer style? Or whatever it was he was “barbequing” on his gas grill with his hot dog buns.

"In North Carolina, we have Eastern BBQ and Western BBQ- but neither involves a spatula, hot dog buns or gas grills," said NCGOP Chairman Michael Whatley. "Cunningham is an elitist trial lawyer, and this BBQ gaffe demonstrates that he is out of touch with North Carolina voters who actually know what North Carolina BBQ is."
