BREAKING US Jobs Surge Set Monthly Record, Unemployment in North Carolina Continues to Rise

June 5, 2020
For Immediate Release

RALEIGH NC- The U.S. May jobs reported the largest ever jump in new employment. President Donald J. Trump launched his reopen America initiative back in mid April, and the job report shows the results. America is reopening, and people are getting back to work and rebuilding their lives and small businesses. Thanks to Governor Roy Cooper’s prolonged shutdown, North Carolina is still largely closed to business, and unemployment increased in all 100 counties and statewide unemployment claims soared to 1.4 million.

To make matters worse for North Carolina families, Cooper’s incompetence in administrating unemployment benefits earned the dubious distinction of being ranked worst in the nation for timely benefits by the Department of Labor. Bizarrely, yesterday when asked about this enormous backlog, Cooper focused on fixing the call system and had no plan for addressing the online complaints. Cooper is apparently unaware we are in the 21st century. 1,388,806 claims have been filed online while only 33,834 were filed over the phone.

“This month’s employment numbers show the stark difference between the Trump and Cooper approaches to the economy,” said NCGOP Spokesman Tim Wigginton. “Cooper’s refusal to reopen the state for business and have any sort of plan aimed at rebuilding the North Carolina economy has had a devastating impact on North Carolina workers, families, and small businesses. Meanwhile, the Trump economy shocked pundits by recording the largest one-month drop in unemployment ever."
