For Immediate Release

Raleigh, NC- During an interview with The Takeaway’s Amy Walter this weekend, Cal Cunningham was asked to identify an issue where he disagrees with national Democrats or Joe Biden, but nowhere in Cunningham’s long rambling answer could he name one.

“Cal Cunningham is running TV ads claiming that he’ll be an independent voice in the Senate, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” said NCGOP Press Secretary Tim Wigginton. “Cunningham has spent his entire campaign embracing extreme liberal policiesand criticizing President Trump. His interview with Amy Walter just solidifies what North Carolinians already know to be true: Cal Cunningham will be a rubber-stamp for whatever radical policy that Chuck Schumer proposes.”

QUESTION: I’m wondering if there are issues or proposals that are out there that the National Party, maybe even presidential candidate Joe Biden are putting forward that you disagree with?

CUNNINGHAM: Fair question, Amy. First of all, I seek not to represent a party in Washington. I seek to represent the people who call North Carolina home and so part of what I’m doing here is less about being a democrat and much more about being in-tune with and in-touch with the voices in North Carolina. There are going to be times where I disagree with my own party and I’m very explicit about that. There is a world where Donald Trump is in a second term and as the Senator for North Carolina, I’ve got to figure out ways that we can work together when it suits and drives North Carolina’s interests. Now, either Joe Biden or Donald Trump, I would expect to hold accountable if they are pursuing things inconsistent with North Carolina’s interests and the voices I’m hearing from here. So there’s going to be times where I disagree with my own party and I sort of got a strong Scotch-Irish independent streak as well. It’s part about growing up in a small and rural community. It’s a part about my own temperament, but there will be days when I’m certain that I will disagree with the leadership of the Democratic party.
