“Defund The Police” Movement In Asheville Causes 31 Police Officers Resign

RALEIGH, NC-- As Asheville city council prepares to vote on defunding the police after already limiting the Asheville Police Department’s budget, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported Thursday that 31 police officers, including 18 senior officers, have resigned since June of this year. Asheville City Manager Debra Campbell noted that the resignations are linked to calls to defund the police.

  • “‘Unfortunately departures are a trend occurring in many other communities across this country. We also acknowledge and recognize this is a difficult time for the department following protests and a call from some in our community to defund the police department.”’

“The police resignations we’re seeing in Asheville will be a nationwide trend if Cal Cunningham is elected,” said NCGOP Press Secretary Tim Wigginton. “Cunningham has already said he ‘joins the fight’ of rioters who want to ‘abolish the police’ by any means necessary. There’s no doubt Cunningham will undermine the safety of North Carolina by pandering to his extreme liberal base and weakening the ability of law enforcement to do their jobs.”

The Asheville-Citizen Times report comes after Charlotte City Council decreased funding for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and after Cal Cunningham during this week’s WRAL debate was caught laughing at two law enforcement officers who were ambushed and shot in the line of duty this past weekend.
